The State of On-Premise Beer: Trends, Challenges and Opportunities - NIQ September 2026 (opens in a new tab)

According to the September 2026 report from NIQ, the U.S. on-premise beer market remains under pressure, but the latest data reveals a more nuanced picture beneath the overall declines. Total Beer/FMB/Cider dollar sales slipped just 0.7% over the latest 12 weeks despite a 4.6% decline in volume, as higher pricing helped offset softer demand and distribution. Performance is also diverging across segments: imported beer and Domestic Super Premium returned to volume growth, while Craft, Domestic Premium, Hard Seltzer and several other segments continued to contract.

At the same time, several shifts point to where the category may be finding new momentum. Non-Alcoholic Beer continues to significantly outpace the broader market, while draft is gaining share from packaged beer and playing an especially important role in the growth of imports. The report also highlights changing consumer priorities around moderation, value and willingness to spend, alongside a changing on-premise outlet landscape. Together, these trends suggest that the beer market's story is becoming less about overall category performance and more about which segments, formats, occasions and venues are proving most resilient.
