While legacy snack subcategories like potato chips and tortilla chips are losing steam, innovation is picking up in unexpected places. High-protein snacks are on the rise—products with 20–24g of protein per serving saw a 60% year-over-year sales jump—and consumer scrutiny of ingredients is reshaping formulation strategies. Seed oils are falling out of favor, with brands increasingly turning to avocado and olive oils to meet demand for cleaner labels.

Despite flat overall category performance, bright spots are emerging. “Other alternative” snacks grew +13% in dollar sales, while meat crisps and pita chips also gained ground. These shifts reveal that shoppers are still snacking—but they’re looking for more than just flavor. They want functional benefits, better-for-you ingredients, and brands that adapt fast.
