About
Ulu Foods is a specialty food brand founded in 2020 by Courtney Mills, originating in Barbados and built around the versatile tropical superfruit known as breadfruit, or 'ulu. The company was born out of necessity when the COVID-19 pandemic cut off access to imported specialty foods for a family managing grain-free dietary needs due to children's allergies and autoimmune conditions. Discovering breadfruit growing wild nearby, the founder began developing grain-free food products from the fruit, ultimately partnering with Sunbury Harvest, a local Barbadian farm, to convert an existing sweet potato processing facility into a dedicated breadfruit production factory.
Ulu Foods produces a range of consumer-packaged snack and meal products made from breadfruit, including tortillas, crackers, tortilla chips, pizza, fries, and beef jerky-style snacks. All products are handcrafted in small batches and positioned at the intersection of allergen-free, clean-label, and grain-free eating. The product line is free from all top 14 allergens and is produced in an allergen-free facility, making it suitable for school environments and households managing complex food sensitivities. Products contain no artificial additives, no added sugar or flavors, no refined starches, no artificial colors, and are free from grains, dairy, legumes, nightshades, nuts, eggs, soy, sesame, and corn.
The company sources breadfruit from wild-grown, organic trees and emphasizes a clean, plant-based ingredient philosophy it describes as 'tree to table.' All products are 100% plant-based and vegan-friendly, appealing to consumers following Paleo, AIP (Autoimmune Protocol), vegan, and allergen-free diets. Breadfruit itself is nutritionally dense, offering meaningful amounts of Vitamin C, potassium, and dietary fiber, which the brand leverages as a key health differentiator.
Ulu Foods operates a partially solar-powered factory in Barbados and claims a climate-positive supply chain. A percentage of profits is donated to fund breadfruit tree planting initiatives in food-insecure communities globally, positioning the brand within the broader impact and mission-driven food movement. The company targets retail grocery channels, with customers referencing weekly store purchases, and has fielded wholesale inquiries, suggesting distribution ambitions beyond direct-to-consumer. Its geographic reach is oriented toward North American and international markets, with a manufacturing base in the Caribbean.
