Trefethen Family Vineyards

Trefethen Family Vineyards is one of Napa Valley's pioneering estate wineries, founded in 1968 by Eugene and Catherine Trefethen in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, California. Now in its third generation of family ownership, the winery produces a distinguished portfolio of estate-grown wines crafted exclusively from fruit harvested on its own sustainably farmed vineyards. The Oak Knoll District's characteristically cool climate imparts a signature brightness and freshness to its wines, a hallmark that has defined the Trefethen style across decades of vintages.

The winery's portfolio includes highly regarded varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and proprietary blends such as the Cowgirl and the Pilot. Its 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon earned 95 points and Gold recognition, while the 2021 Cowgirl and the Pilot received 96 points and Double Gold at the Sunset International Wine Competition. The 2021 Merlot earned 94 points and Silver recognition, further demonstrating the consistent quality of its estate production.

Trefethen operates from a historically significant facility — the only surviving 19th-century wooden three-level gravity-flow winery in Napa Valley, a structure that underscores both the heritage and the winemaking philosophy of the operation. The use of gravity-flow design reflects a commitment to gentle, minimal-intervention processing that has become central to the winery's identity.

Sustainability is embedded in the company's operational philosophy dating back to its founding, well before the term entered mainstream agricultural discourse. The winery has been recognized with the California Green Medal Environment Award for 2022, which honors leaders in sustainable winegrowing across environmental, economic, and social equity dimensions. The winery gained international recognition early in its history, participating in the Gault & Millau Wine Olympics held in Paris in 1979 and a subsequent rematch in Burgundy in 1980 — events considered pivotal in establishing Napa Valley's reputation on the world stage.
