About
Premiati Oleifici Barbera, operating as Manfredi Barbera & Figli S.P.A., is a historic Italian olive oil producer with over 140 years of heritage dating back to 1880. Founded by Lorenzo Barbera Sr. in Sicily, the company has been family-owned for five generations and is renowned for producing premium extra virgin olive oils. The company's journey began when Lorenzo Barbera Sr., a champion fencer who received a gold watch from King Umberto I of Italy, established the business in partnership with the Florio family as Società degli Oleifici Siciliani in 1894. The company achieved early international recognition, winning gold medals at the Universal Exhibitions in Paris (1900), Saint Louis (1904), and Palermo (1906). A pioneering innovation came in 1910 when Lorenzo and his son Manfredi first bottled extra virgin olive oil in glass bottles, previously used for Marsala wine, enabling safe transportation across the Mediterranean and Atlantic. Under the leadership of Manfredi Sr., known as 'the Colonel' for his military precision and dedication, the company became a leader in olive oil quality control, with Manfredi serving as an arbitrator for the International Olive Council. The 1950s saw another breakthrough with the launch of unfiltered olive oil, bringing freshly pressed oil quality to urban consumers. The company expanded internationally in the 1990s, particularly conquering the American market with their Frantoia brand, which celebrates the femininity of Sicilian terroir. Today, the fifth generation, represented by Lorenzo and Carlo Barbera, continues the family tradition with a modern 4.0 agricultural approach, combining traditional methods with cutting-edge technology. The company operates production facilities in Custonaci (Trapani) and offices in Palermo, maintaining strong ties to Sicilian olive growing through consortiums like COFIOL and ORO Sicilia. Their product portfolio includes premium extra virgin olive oils that showcase Sicily's indigenous olive varieties, serving both domestic and international markets with a focus on quality, tradition, and sustainable agricultural practices.
