J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines is a family-owned California winery with over 50 years of history in estate grape growing and wine production. Founded by Jerry Lohr, the company is recognized as one of the most popular wine brands in the United States and played a pioneering role in establishing California's Central Coast as a world-class winegrowing region. The winery operates 3,700 acres of estate vineyards spread across three of California's most prestigious appellations: Monterey County's Arroyo Seco district, Paso Robles, and Napa Valley. Jerry Lohr's agricultural background, rooted in South Dakota farming, informed his early research into California grape-growing regions beginning in the late 1960s. His instincts led him to Monterey County in the early 1970s, where he planted 280 acres in 1972 in what would become the heart of the Arroyo Seco appellation — an area prized for its cool, windy climate and rocky soils ideal for Chardonnay. In the 1980s, the company expanded into Paso Robles, recognizing the region's potential for Bordeaux varietals, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, owing to its rich soils and dramatic diurnal temperature swings. Today, the winery is led by a second generation of the Lohr family, continuing the founder's legacy of quality viticulture and craftsmanship. J. Lohr produces a range of wines across multiple tiers, including limited releases, small-lot single-vineyard bottlings, and winery-exclusive offerings available at its two Wine Centers located in Paso Robles and historic downtown San Jose. The Paso Robles location offers vineyard views and hospitality experiences, while the San Jose location focuses on rare and exclusive gems. The company is deeply committed to sustainable farming practices, a philosophy that traces directly to Jerry Lohr's seven decades of farming experience and is now a core pillar of the brand's identity and operations.
