About
Ford Gum & Machine Co. is a historic American gum manufacturer headquartered in Akron, New York, with roots dating back to 1913. Founded by Ford Mason, a roofing salesman who began leasing gumball machines throughout western New York, the company has grown over more than a century into a leading manufacturer and co-manufacturer of assorted gums, confections, and health-related products for major American brands. The company is perhaps best known as the producer of Big League Chew®, the world's only shredded bubble gum, which has achieved iconic status in American sports culture with over one billion pouches sold and a prominent place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ford Gum also produces Carousel® gumballs, an American classic brand with over 50 years of history, beloved by consumers of all ages. The company's manufacturing facility in Akron, NY serves as the production hub for its branded and co-manufactured product lines. Ford Gum has been involved in co-manufacturing since at least 1960, when it began producing chewing gum for private label brands, and today it positions itself as a full-service co-manufacturer capable of producing a wide variety of gum formats. Its co-manufacturing capabilities span traditional chewing gum, bubble gum, energy gum, and dental gum, reflecting a strong orientation toward functional gum innovation. This breadth of expertise allows the company to work with CPG brands seeking custom gum formulations and manufacturing partnerships. The company has a notable manufacturing heritage, including being the first to print on gumballs using specialized Hartnett machines — equipment still in use today. Ford Gum has maintained domestic production as a point of distinction, having moved Big League Chew® production back to the United States in 2010. The business has remained independently owned since 1997, when management repurchased the company from The Hershey Company, restoring its entrepreneurial roots. With over 110 years of gum manufacturing experience, Ford Gum combines deep industry expertise with a flexible co-manufacturing platform, making it a well-established partner for brands in the confectionery and functional gum categories.
