About
Mousam Valley Mushrooms is a family-owned, certified organic mushroom farm located in Springvale, Maine, operating out of a renovated historic dairy barn situated on twelve acres above the Mousam River Valley. Founded and operated by the Sharood family — father John, son Robert, and daughter Emily — the farm combines mycological expertise, quality control, and strategic marketing to deliver premium specialty mushrooms to customers across New England. Robert Sharood serves as the farm's mycologist and head of quality control, maintaining a continually updated culture library to ensure superior mushroom strains. Emily oversees marketing, design, and a comprehensive lot traceability initiative, while John provides operational and business leadership rooted in a background in software systems and start-up ventures. The farm cultivates its mushrooms on Maine hardwood and straw substrates sourced locally and sustainably, producing a product that closely mirrors wild-foraged mushrooms in flavor and texture. All growing and packing takes place in a fully controlled and automated indoor environment that replicates the ideal natural conditions for each species while eliminating threats such as adverse weather and biological competition. This allows for consistent, year-round production. Mousam Valley Mushrooms holds dual organic certification from both the USDA and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), distinguishing it as a leader in the Maine organic mushroom space. The company offers an extensive portfolio of specialty mushroom varieties, including Italian Oyster, Pink Oyster, Katahdin Oyster (a native Maine strain), Butter Oyster, Shiitake, Lion's Mane, Cinnamon Caps, Velvet Pioppino, King Oyster, and a Forest Medley variety pack. Each variety is cultivated with attention to distinct flavor profiles, textures, and aromas, catering to culinary professionals and home cooks alike. Mushrooms are harvested and delivered within 24 to 48 hours, with a 5 to 7 day freshness guarantee from the date of delivery. Distribution is focused on the New England region, reinforcing the brand's commitment to local freshness. Spent growing substrate is repurposed as nutrient-rich compost for local farms, reflecting a closed-loop agricultural model. The company also actively works to support and mentor other Maine mushroom farms pursuing organic certification, aiming to build a broader regional network of specialty mushroom producers.
