Equal Exchange

Equal Exchange is a worker-owned cooperative and fair trade food company that sources, imports, and sells products grown by small-scale farmer cooperatives around the world. Founded on the principles of fair trade and democratic workplace ownership, the company operates as a genuine alternative to the corporate food supply chain, offering fairly traded foods sold by the case to retailers, food service operators, and community buyers. Its product portfolio includes coffee, cacao, bananas, sugar, and related food products, all sourced from small farmer cooperatives across regions including Latin America and beyond. Key sourcing partners include cooperatives in Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, and Paraguay, among others. Equal Exchange differentiates itself through its deep commitment to direct, long-term relationships with farmer cooperatives, ensuring farmers receive fair prices and stable market access in an industry often dominated by multinational corporations. As a worker-owned cooperative itself, the company practices the same democratic governance principles it advocates for among its farmer partners. Beyond commercial trade, Equal Exchange has an extensive history of cooperative development work, having participated in USAID's Cooperative Development Program (CDP) for over a decade. Through this program, the company worked with more than a dozen cooperatives across six countries on issues including productivity improvements, governance strengthening, quality enhancement, gender equity, youth inclusion, and climate change adaptation. This work spanned coffee, cacao, banana, and sugar producer cooperatives. Following the termination of federal CDP funding, Equal Exchange launched the Small Farmer Fund, a community-supported initiative designed to continue financing farmer-led development projects independent of government contracts. One hundred percent of donations to this fund go directly toward cooperative development projects that support farmer partners facing market instability and climate challenges. The company also hosts an annual summit that brings together stakeholders from across its farmer and consumer network, reinforcing its model of building a participatory food system. Equal Exchange targets values-aligned buyers including natural food retailers, food cooperatives, faith-based organizations, and engaged individual consumers who identify as Citizen-Consumers. Its products carry certifications consistent with its fair trade and organic sourcing commitments, and it positions itself as a credible, mission-driven alternative to mainstream fair trade labels that have been diluted through corporate participation.
