Downtown Joe's Brewery and Restaurant is a historic brewpub and full-service restaurant located in the heart of downtown Napa, California. Operating out of the landmark Oberon Building — originally constructed in 1893 and rebuilt in an art deco style following a 1932 fire — the establishment has deep roots in the Napa Valley community and represents one of the region's longest-running independent brewery and dining operations. The business traces its brewing lineage to 1988, when the location first opened as Willit's Brewery, a seven-barrel microbrewery designed by UC Davis-trained brewmaster Brian Hunt. The current iteration, Downtown Joe's, was established in 1993 under the ownership of Joe and Nancye Peatman along with third-generation Napa restaurateur Joe Ruffino. The brewery has been helmed by brewmaster Colin Kaminski since 1999, with Kaminski taking full operational control in 2003. The establishment brews its beer on-site using a microbrewery system housed within the historic Oberon Building, producing a range of craft beers crafted by dedicated brewmasters with deep industry experience. The food program emphasizes locally sourced ingredients, with a menu spanning breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Downtown Joe's positions itself as a family-friendly, pet-friendly destination with both indoor and outdoor dining options. The expansive patio wraps around the historic building and offers views of the Napa River, with additional seating capacity extended into adjacent Veterans Park, accommodating up to 26 outdoor tables. The venue regularly hosts live music events, sports viewings, and seasonal holiday gatherings, reinforcing its role as a community hub for both Napa residents and visitors. Unlike many of the premium wine-focused establishments that have come to define modern Napa Valley, Downtown Joe's maintains an unpretentious, neighborhood-oriented identity — often described as one of the last connections to "Old Napa." The Oberon Building itself has historical significance beyond hospitality; it underwent a major seismic retrofit in 2010 and has been providing earthquake monitoring data to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) via an on-site seismograph since 2012, withstanding the magnitude 6.0 Napa earthquake of August 2014. The founding brewing vision was inspired by the legacy of the Hamm's brewing family, with Chuck Ankeny — great-grandson of Theodore Hamm — originally conceiving the microbrewery in 1985 as a nod to his family's macro-brewing heritage dating back to 19th-century St. Paul, Minnesota. Today, the business continues under family ownership with a philosophy centered on quality food and beverage, community engagement, and an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere.
