ATOKA, Okla. — Achapa Beverage, a Choctaw-owned beverage co-manufacturing company, today announced plans to establish its production facility inside the historic 1936 Atoka Armory, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The City of Atoka, located in the Choctaw Nation, voted to donate the historic armory to Achapa Beverage to be rehabilitated and adapted for use as a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.
The $30 million project will combine the historic rehabilitation of the armory with new construction of a production facility housing state-of-the-art Krones canning equipment, positioning Achapa Beverage to serve co-packing customers across a seven-state territory. The project is expected to bring up to 40 new jobs to Atoka.
Achapa Beverage is the first Native woman-owned beverage co-manufacturing plant in the country — a large-scale canning and production facility built to serve mid-size canned beverage brands. The company's original funding came from the MoonSoon Fund, an investment fund created by Navajo women to support Native women entrepreneurs.
“This is Native women supporting Native women,” said Cindy Convery, CEO of Achapa Beverage and Choctaw native. “The MoonSoon Fund believed in this vision from the beginning, and the City of Atoka’s donation of the armory gives us the chance to bring new life to a building with deep local history while building something new for this community. We’re proud to be building Achapa Beverage as an example of what’s possible when Native women invest in Native women.”
The Atoka Armory has stood in the community since 1936. Its adaptive reuse as a modern manufacturing facility will preserve the building's historic character while equipping it for 21st-century beverage production.
The proposed design maintains the armory's historic integrity and repurposes the interior for modern manufacturing, using state-of-the-art Krones equipment for canned, non-alcoholic beverages.
