About
Gut Oggau is an Austrian biodynamic winery located in the Burgenland region, founded in 2007 by Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe-Eselböck. The estate was purchased with the vision of creating something enduring and meaningful through the practice of natural, biodynamic viticulture. Since its inception, the winery has committed fully to biodynamic farming principles, working in harmony with natural cycles to preserve and enhance the vitality of its vineyards. The estate encompasses vineyards with diverse soil profiles, including limestone, gravel, and slate terroirs, each contributing distinct character to the wines produced.
Gut Oggau produces a range of natural wines — red, white, and rosé — unified under a distinctive concept of a 'wine family' spanning three generational tiers. The youngest generation wines are described as youthful, fresh, and vibrant, reflecting the lighter, more energetic expressions of their terroir. The parent generation wines offer greater depth, complexity, and composed character. The grandparent generation represents the estate's most mature and contemplative expressions. Each wine in the portfolio is given a personal name and a hand-drawn portrait on the label, reflecting the individual personality the winemakers perceive in each wine, including characters such as Theodora, Winifred, Atanasius, Timotheus, and Emmeram.
The winemaking philosophy at Gut Oggau centers on minimal intervention both in the vineyard and the cellar. Grapes are selected according to strict criteria, and all wines across colors and styles are treated with the same process — no differentiation is made based on grape color or desired style. This approach results in highly individual, authentic expressions of soil, climate, and vintage. The estate views itself not merely as a wine producer but as a steward of agricultural and cultural landscapes, with the vineyards serving as the primary creative canvas.
Biodynamic certification underpins the estate's agricultural practices, which include careful soil management, integration of animals, and attention to cosmic and seasonal rhythms. The Tscheppe-Eselböcks bring complementary backgrounds to the operation: Stephanie with expertise in hospitality management and photography, and Eduard with formal training in viticulture and economics. Gut Oggau wines have earned recognition and a dedicated following among natural wine enthusiasts and sommeliers internationally, with distribution reaching customers around the world through direct online sales and select trade channels.
