Green's Beverages

A family-owned adult beverage retailer operating large-format package stores across South Carolina and Georgia, with a history stretching back nearly 90 years. The business began in 1937 when founder Leonard Greenbaum opened Green's Package Store on Ponce De Leon Avenue in Midtown Atlanta, running it as a standalone storefront until his son Jerry joined after military service in the 1960s. Jerry added a second Atlanta-area location on Buford Highway just north of Lenox Road, then expanded into South Carolina in 1977 after noticing that Myrtle Beach had no large-format beverage stores; the Myrtle Beach store opened just before Christmas that year and quickly became the leading volume store in the state, drawing tour buses, Canadian visitors and vacationing South Carolinians with low prices and what was at the time one of the largest liquor, beer and wine selections anywhere. A Greenville location followed in 1983 and became the prototype for the chain's format for decades: roughly 8,000 square feet with high ceilings and bright lighting. A downtown Columbia store was built in 1984 adjacent to California Dreaming, and the success of that restaurant marked the family's parallel move into the restaurant business, a separate 100% family-owned company that today operates 17 restaurants across the Southeast. Expansion in Columbia continued with Green's Beverage Warehouse near Harbison Boulevard in 2003, a 15,000 square foot warehouse-format store carrying wine, beer and general goods, and a newest location on Garners Ferry Road near I-77 opened in 2020 at 18,500 square feet and stocking nearly every category of alcoholic beverage on the market. Merchandising emphasis is on breadth and depth of assortment alongside service: rare single malt Scotch, cult-favorite IPAs and craft beer, Napa Valley cabernets and other fine wine, and specialty spirits such as wine-barrel-aged tequila. The stores also advise customers on event and party planning, helping shoppers size and balance an order by considering time of day, guest demographics and occasion rather than headcount alone. Lock Reddic has served as president since 1996. The company describes itself as deliberately small at the corporate level, running from modest offices in Columbia, South Carolina, with long-tenured staff including associates of 40 years, and remains committed to both its Georgia and South Carolina markets. Online ordering and store e-commerce are handled through the City Hive retail platform, with companion mobile apps for shoppers.
